The first digital search can be traced back to Hans Peter Luhn, an IBM engineer who, as early as 1960, was working on making information more readily accessible. With his "KWIC Index"—Key Word In Context—he laid the foundation for what later became internet search. His idea: to display important terms in context to find content more quickly. A principle that remains fundamental to every search function today.
