Who hasn't seen it: the yellow rubber duck with the cheeky beak and charming gaze? It's a staple in many bathrooms, a cult object, a collector's item, and a childhood companion all in one. But did you know that the first rubber duck was invented in the 1940s – and that back then, it couldn't even swim?

From hard rubber to bright yellow cult

The first rubber ducks weren't the cute, swimming friends we know today. In the 1940s, during World War II, rubber became a popular material for all sorts of household items. Toy manufacturers also experimented with it. This led to the creation of the first "rubber duck" – albeit made of hard rubber, heavy, and with little swimming ability. A toy for the bathtub? More of a decorative item.

A duck legend is born

Only later did the potential of this charming bird become apparent: Manufacturers began making rubber ducks from soft vinyl or plastic—hollow, lightweight, and buoyant. The squeaking sound that characterizes almost every rubber duck today also emerged in the 1960s. Fun fact: The squeaking isn't an imitation of a duck, but is caused by air being forced through a small opening—basically like a miniature air pump.

“Rubber Duckie” goes pop culture

The rubber duck's big breakthrough came in 1970 – thanks to Ernie from Sesame Street. In a now-legendary TV segment, he sang the song "Rubber Duckie, You're the One" – an anthem to his yellow rubber duck. The song became so popular that it even made it into the American charts. From that moment on, the rubber duck was a pop culture superstar.

Collector's item with world records

Today, rubber ducks come in all colors, shapes, and professions—from rock star ducks to zombie ducks. In Great Britain, there's even a rubber duck race on the River Thames, where thousands of rubber ducks compete against each other. And the Guinness Book of Records honors Charlotte Lee from the USA, who owns the largest collection of rubber ducks with over 9,000.

Conclusion: A small duck with a big story

The rubber duck is more than just a children's toy—it's a piece of design history, a symbol of lightheartedness, and a true perennial favorite. Whether in the bathtub, on the desk, or on the shelf, this duck brings a smile to everyday life.
